Kinderbijslag (child benefit)

Ukrainian children with temporary protection have the right to kinderbijslag if their parents work in the Netherlands in employed work. This is state assistance designed to cover the costs of maintaining a child up to 18 years old.

Leefgeld (living allowance)

Children receive a monthly cash living allowance that consists of three parts:

  • Kleedgeld (clothing allowance): €65.77 per month for children of all age groups
  • Eetgeld (food allowance): depends on the child's age and family size
  • Child under 18 years old in a family of 2 persons: €216.41
  • In a family of 3 persons: €183.94
  • In a family of 4 or more persons: €162.33
  • Extra toelage (additional payment): €77.16 for children living in foster care

These amounts are effective from 1 August 2026.

Eligibility requirements

  • Parent or guardian must be registered in the Basic Population Register (BRP) in a municipality in the Netherlands
  • If the child is under 18 years old, they are considered part of the family with their parents provided they are not married
  • If one of the parents (aged 18+) starts working, the living allowance (leefgeld) stops for the entire family. However, income from work (minimum 3 days per week) is usually more than leefgeld
  • If a parent receives state payments (unemployment, disability), leefgeld also stops
