Ukrainian Language for Young Children

A course in Ukrainian language for children aged 5–7 run by the Ukrainian Crisis Centre in Ireland. Classes meet once a week (two 30-minute lessons per session) for 50 sessions total. In-person in Dublin. Children will learn the basics: the alphabet, writing, reading, sounds and vocabulary. Taught by writer and teacher Diana Melnikova.

About the course

This course is designed to teach the basics of the Ukrainian language to young children. Children learn sounds and letters, writing, reading, and develop their speaking skills through interactive activities.

Course content

  • Getting to know the teacher and other children
  • Alphabet: learning, writing and recognizing printed letters
  • Writing: reproducing printed letters
  • Syllables: combining letters into syllables
  • Sounds: learning, distinguishing soft/hard, voiced/voiceless consonants
  • Cursive: writing letters in cursive
  • Reading by syllables: combining letters into words
  • Vocabulary: learning new words and applying them in practice
  • Speaking development: repeating and retelling content from texts and videos

How classes are organized

  • Once a week
  • Two consecutive lessons, 30 minutes each
  • 50 sessions total
