What it is

IChO (International Chemistry Olympiad) is an international chemistry olympiad. It has theoretical and practical rounds; the practical round takes place in a real laboratory and tests laboratory skills, not just knowledge.

Before the olympiad, organisers publish a set of preparatory problems — it shows the topics that go beyond the school curriculum.

How to join Ukraine's team

The path is the same for all subject olympiads — through the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in the respective subject. It has four stages:

  1. Stage I — school level. Held at your school, usually in October–November. You can register simply with your subject teacher.
  2. Stage II — district or city level. December–January. Participants are selected from school level winners.
  3. Stage III — regional level. January–February. Participants come from district level winners, with some places distributed by national ranking.
  4. Stage IV — national final. February–March. The results of this stage open the path forward.

After the final, the strongest participants are invited to training camps. Ukraine's team participation is organised by the Institute for Modernisation of Education Content (IMZO) — this is where team compositions and results are published.

What's important to understand: you cannot apply directly to the international olympiad. There is only one entry point — through the school level. So you should start preparing one and a half years before the competition.

How to prepare

  • Start with past competition problems. They are published in open access on the official olympiad website — this gives the most accurate picture of the level.
  • Find a teacher or study group. Self-preparation at this level almost never works: you need someone to help you understand your mistakes.
  • Don't miss the school level. This is the most common reason why strong students don't advance — they simply didn't register in time.
  • Follow announcements from IMZO — the exact dates of stages change every year.

Does this give you benefits when applying to university

Participants who represented Ukraine at international competitions are a separate category under admission rules. Conditions change every year, so the only reliable source is the current Procedure for Admission to Higher Education Institutions, which the Ministry of Education publishes separately each year. Don't rely on last year's articles — the rules really do change.
