International Physics Olympiad

What is it

IPhO (International Physics Olympiad) is an international physics competition for high school students. It consists of two parts: a theoretical round and an experimental round, where you must conduct a real experiment and analyse data.

The experimental part is often the surprise — you can't prepare for it just by solving textbook problems. You need hands-on lab experience.

How to join Ukraine's team

There's one path for all subject olympiads — through the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in your subject. It has four stages:

1. Stage I — School level. Held at your school, usually in October–November. You sign up with your subject teacher.
2. Stage II — District or city level. December–January. Participants are selected from school-level winners.
3. Stage III — Regional level. January–February. Prize-winners from district competitions qualify; some spots are allocated by national ranking.
4. Stage IV — National final. February–March. Results from this stage determine who moves forward.

After the final, the strongest students are invited to training camps. Ukraine's team participation is organized by the Institute for Modernization of Education Content (IMZO) — this is where team rosters and results are published.

Key point: you can't apply directly to the international olympiad. The only way in is through the school stage. So start preparing a year or so before the competition.

How to prepare

• Start with past problems. They're freely available on the official olympiad website — the best way to understand the level.
• Find a teacher or club. Self-study at this level rarely works — you need someone to help you identify mistakes.
• Don't miss the school stage. This is the most common reason talented students don't advance — they simply forget to register on time.
• Follow announcements from IMZO — exact dates change each year.

Does it help with university admission

Olympiad participants who represented Ukraine at international competitions are a separate category in admission rules. Conditions change every year, so your only reliable source is the current Rules of Admission to Higher Education Institutions, published by the Ministry of Education for each year. Don't rely on last year's articles — the rules really do change.
