IBO (International Biology Olympiad) is an international biology olympiad. The theoretical part covers cell biology, genetics, plant and animal physiology, ecology and ethology. The practical part includes work with a microscope, specimen preparation and data analysis.
The scope of material is significantly broader than the school curriculum, so preparation usually starts two to three years in advance.
There is one path that is the same for all subject olympiads — through the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in the relevant subject. It has four stages:
After the final, the strongest competitors are invited to training camps. Ukraine's team participation is organized by the Institute for the Modernization of Educational Content (IMZO) — this is where team rosters and results are published.
The key thing to understand: you cannot apply directly to an international olympiad. The only way in is through the school stage. So you need to start about a year to a year and a half before the competition itself.
Participants who represented Ukraine at international competitions form a separate category in university admission rules. Conditions change every year, so the only reliable source is the current Procedure for Admission to Higher Education Institutions, published separately by the Ministry of Education each year. Don't rely on articles from previous years: the rules really do change.
