EUCYS (European Union Contest for Young Scientists) is a scientific projects competition of the European Union for young researchers. Unlike subject olympiads, you don't solve problems here: participants present their own research, which they've been working on for months.
Judging focuses on the independence of the work, scientific novelty, and how well the author understands the topic during the defence. Projects are accepted from any field — from biology to social sciences.
Experience defending your own research before an international jury is a rare thing for a schoolstudent, and it looks good on applications for international scholarships and exchange programmes. The project made for EUCYS typically becomes the foundation of your portfolio.
This is a project competition, so the path is different from subject olympiads. In Ukraine, selection is conducted by the Small Academy of Sciences (MAN) — through a competition-defence of research papers.
Current conditions and deadlines are on the MAN Ukraine website.
Participants who represented Ukraine at international competitions are a separate category in admission rules. Conditions change every year, so the only reliable source is the current Procedure for Admission to Higher Education Institutions, which the Ministry of Education publishes separately each year. Don't rely on last year's articles: the rules really do change.
Always check the official website before applying: dates and conditions change every year.
