What is it

GENIUS Olympiad is an international project competition dedicated to the environment and sustainable development. It takes place in the USA at Rochester Institute of Technology.

What sets it apart from other olympiads: this competition isn't just for science students. Categories include scientific research, engineering, art, essays, business ideas, and robotics — anything related to environmental topics.

This is a real opportunity for a child with a humanities or creative background to compete at an international level.

How to participate

This is a project-based competition, so the selection process differs from subject-specific olympiads. In Ukraine, selection is conducted by Little Academy of Sciences (MAN) through a competition involving the presentation of research papers.

  1. Register at a local MAN branch and prepare your own research project with a scientific supervisor.
  2. Pass the regional stage of the competition (usually February).
  3. Pass the national stage (March–April).
  4. The strongest MAN projects are selected to represent Ukraine at international competitions.

How to prepare

  • Start with problems from past years. They're published openly on the official olympiad website — this gives you the clearest picture of the level.
  • Find a teacher or club. Self-study at this level rarely works: you need someone to review your mistakes.
  • Don't miss the school stage. This is the most common reason strong students don't advance — they simply didn't register in time.
  • Follow announcements from IMZO — exact dates vary each year.

Does this give advantages for university admission

Participants who represented Ukraine at international competitions fall into a separate category under admission rules. Conditions change yearly, so the only reliable source is the current Order of Admission to Higher Education Institutions, which the Ministry of Education publishes separately each year. Don't rely on articles from previous years: the rules really do change.
