IOAA (International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics) is an international olympiad in astronomy and astrophysics. It has an unusual format: beyond theory, there is a data analysis round and an observational round — working with real or simulated night sky.
It's one of the few olympiads where you need the ability to navigate the starry sky, not just solve calculations.
There's one path for all subject olympiads — through the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in the respective subject. It has four stages:
After the final, the strongest participants are invited to training camps. Ukraine's team participation is organised by the Institute for the Modernisation of Education Content (IMZO) — this is where team rosters and results are published.
The key thing to understand: you cannot apply directly to an international olympiad. There is only one entry point — through the school stage. So you need to start a year or more before the competition itself.
Participants who represented Ukraine in international competitions are a separate category under admission rules. Conditions change yearly, so the only reliable source is the current Procedure for Admission to Higher Education Institutions, which the Ministry of Education publishes separately each year. Don't rely on articles from last year — the rules really do change.
